I ordered one of those cheap plastic 50mm fixed length Canon f/1.8 lenses on Sunday and just received it about two hours ago. Here’s a quickie shot that I took in my dimly lit kitchen.

I bought it so I can take photos in dimmer light. My beloved Tamron zoom lens is an f/2.8 and sometimes struggles with low light shots… not a good thing in Seattle in winter.
This new lens is going to take some getting used to. The 1.6 crop factor of my DSLR makes it effectively 85mm… which is a bit cramped for some of the shots I take… but it should work really well for outside work!
I haven’t been posting much lately because I’ve been shooting a great deal… and have another 5 shoots scheduled before the end of this weekend… but I’ll try to post updates as often as possible!
Here’s one more…

on October 16th, 2007I can’t wait to upgrade bodies to a full-frame sensor and then get to take advantage of some gear like that 50mm f/1.4. Also my LensBaby is feeling unloved because I can never use it enough, the crop factor really ruins a lot of the effect if you stop down for brighter light. Oh well, good luck with the new lens! Can’t wait to see some more new stuff.

on October 16th, 2007Thanks! I’m saving up for a full frame… and a 50mm f/1.4
But so far I really like this lens. For the price, the quality of the shots is amazing… and the constraints will force me to think about photography in a different way… which can only be a good thing.

on November 11th, 2007[...] From a shoot with Flannery last Sunday. I used my new prime lens and one overhead flood for this shot. I’m REALLY happy with my new lens… the lack of zoom is it’s forcing me to work in a different way that I’m used to and I’m thinking more about framing… which can only be a good thing. [...]

on November 11th, 2007Chris – The 50mm IS perfect for portraits… but on my 1.6 cropped DSLR body, it turns into an 80mm lens which is a bit too close in my cramped studio… still… for close up portrait work it’s quite nice and I’ll probably use it for outdoor shoots where I can use my feet to “zoom”.
